Honesty Through History

Dr. Mohan Bhagwat said in Mumbai, “Gen Z and Gen Alpha are more honest than our existing generation.” Every word of his words carries immense weight in social, political space today. The phrase “more honest” deserves closer attention. It does not mean the current generation is dishonest. Honesty has always been central to civilizations, revolutions, and movements — a quest for truth and absolute knowledge. Indian saints and philosopher’s path of salvation were rooted in the pursuit of ultimate truth, leaving no space for dishonesty. Freedom fighters like Gandhi, Ambedkar, Shastri, and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya — while representing diverse opinions and spectrums of thought — embodied honesty in their mission of nationhood. Scientists who challenged orthodoxies, even at personal cost, were driven by honest curiosity and scientific spirit. Jesus Christ, who pardoned those who crucified him, remains the supreme example of honesty. And even in the existing generation today, countless unsung warriors, foot soldiers, and climate activists stand as beacons of truth. Vested interest is the source of dishonesty.

The Island Analogy

Consider a crude example from another angle: Suppose, a group of people is stranded on an island with immense engineering resources, limited survival means, and no external help, seeking to rescue themselves. Would there be a more honest conversation than this? There is no pursuit of spirituality, no formation of nation, no biases to fight against, no victim or perpetrator. They would not discriminate based on race, gender, age, nationality, skin color, or language. Yet the instinct of collective survival makes them more honest than ever. All the above examples lead us to the deep meaning of Gen Z.

Gen Z as Global Citizens

A section of Gen Z is criticized for not respecting or inheriting the values preached by parents, ancestors, civilizations, or cultural systems across the globe. Yet the new generation is not discarding anything; they are seeking relevance in their own lives. They value spiritual awakening not restricted to one religion, correlate freedom struggles across nations, exchange scientific ideas and social themes through global social media, believe in climate change initiatives cutting across governments, and as global travelers adopt customs without barriers. For the first time in human history, they are true global citizens. They accept gender as natural rather than an object of exploitation or religious dictate, respect spirituality, worship the bravery of soldiers, and understand the pains and sacrifices of past generations while adapting to a global order driven by immense knowledge and new opportunities. Most important, like those stranded on an island, Gen Z stands at the crossroads of past and future, making their interactions as honest as survival itself. The confusion, misleading of youngsters, exploitation for political purposes, and encouragement of destructive tendencies will all be questioned by Gen Z sometime, for they demand logical answers, not obedience to the past. Gen Z holds a distinct advantage over earlier generations, who, despite honesty, were limited by knowledge and often compromised by selfish, vested interests. Not a course correction, a reflection.

Not rhetoric nor course correction,

Gen Z, standing at the crossroads of past and future, embodies honesty not necessary as virtue but as lived reality. They question biases, reject blind obedience, and demand logical answers, while embracing spirituality, global citizenship, and the sacrifices of earlier generations. Unlike the past, where vested interests often clouded honesty and limited knowledge constrained progress, Gen Z thrives in a world of boundless information and shared responsibility. Dr. Mohan Bhagwat’s statement that the young generation is more honest is therefore not a passing remark, rhetoric or political course correction, but a profound reflection of our present moment — a reminder that honesty, freed from vested interests, is the true foundation of the future.
